President’s Message
It was a great party! Our annual dinner meeting on Sunday Sept 24th, was wonderful. Our front steps and entrance were
decorated with beautiful flowering pots by Merrill, of Merrill’s pots. The garden court was even more beautiful when
artists hung their paintings along the fence. We started the party with hors d’oeuvres provided by Jerry Clifford and
BJ Fan. The dinner was arranged by Patty Ecker and Joseph Benti. What a wonderful dinner! Food was truly delicious with
a chicken entree, green beans and mashed potatoes. We had a short business meeting to elect officers to serve on the board
for the coming year. Our current board members have all agreed to serve for another year and, in addition, we welcomed
Anita McDermott to be a member-at-large. We also had a surprise presentation at the dinner. Linda Ramelli presented a
Lifetime Membership to John Colby who has done so much for the Center in the past years. Thank you very much, John!
We had the most fun when we were called to participate in a “mysterious” art project arranged by Anita. We were given
one or two pieces of wood and everybody painted their piece individually and creatively. After we enjoyed our desserts,
we gathered and assembled all the pieces together. Voila! It was a masterpiece – a colorful jigsaw frog! Thanks to Anita
for donating the entire cost of this project. For those of you who missed this grand event, you can go to our website to
enjoy the pictures taken at the dinner. Also, thanks to Linda Ramelli for her tasty salad,
cakes baked by Patty and Jo. Thanks to Andrew Luu and all those who helped set up beforehand and/or cleanup afterwards.
I hope I didn’t leave anyone out.
Have you noticed the changes in our Center? Our cleanup team, led by Jerry Clifford, managed to clean up the whole place
in two hours on Sept 16th. Special thanks to Noboko McClure and Patty Ecker, they cleaned up corners that haven’t been
touched for years! Also, thanks to Joseph Benti, BJ Fan and Bryan McCall for helping to clean. Our new carpet was
installed on the following Monday. Many thanks to Bettie Braunger for her generous donation and to another anonymous donor.

this!
Our hospitality chairperson, Mia Mead, is resigning from her post. We wish to thank Mia for donating her time for the past

President’s Message
Good news! We are now a member of the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce! Our events will be listed on their calendar and website which will go out to all members of the Chamber.
Thanks to our grant writer, Linda Ramelli, the Center has received a grant of $3,000 from Meadowlark Service League to help with our youth programs, demonstration expenses, and new carpeting. However, the carpeting alone is projected to cost over $3,000, se we are short at least $1,000. All ideas for making up the shortfall are welcomed.
Have you seen our photography show? Professional photographers Kathe and Steve Haake have taken some amazing images of their trip to Tibet. Also on display are additional items collected from their trips. Don’t miss it! The show will last until June 25th.
Our next event in July will be “Anything Goes,” a members’ show beginning on July 1st. We will be taking in artwork from 9 to 11 a.m. This show will end on Sunday, July 23rd. Join us in our beautiful garden court on this day for root beer floats from 1 to 4 p.m.
Our pastel artists will have a show from July 29 to August 20. Leisure Village Camera Club will have a show from August 26 to September 3. Our talented member, Mia Mead, will be showing her oil and watercolor art from September 9 to 17. Our gallery schedule is now filled for 2006!
Last month’s demonstration was on linocut techniques. Thanks to Karen Keys, all participants got a piece of her print as a gift. Our next demonstration will be on June 21st; Birgitta Reveles is going to demonstrate her techniques on soft pastels. There will be no demonstration in July and August, so see you in September.

Kris Kelkar at the Santa Barbara Festival
Our CAC member, Kris Kelkar, participated in the “I Madonnari Festival” in Santa Barbara the Memorial Day weekend (05/27-29). It is a festival that occurs in the parking lot of the Santa Barbara Mission from Saturday through Monday every Memorial Day Weekend. The participating artists do artwork in chalk on the parking lot of the Mission. The size of the drawings ranges from 4 feet x 6 feet to over 20 feet wide.
Kris drawing last year made the local TV news. Kris’s drawing for this year's festival was “A tribute to the bald eagle hatchling on Santa Cruz island”. The theme was a bit hit with the crowd, many people oohing and aahing, stopping to talk about the recent baby eagle hatchings on the Channel Islands -- which was exactly what Kris hoped would happen.

A selection will be made from this exhibit to hang in our booth at the Arts & Jazz Festival in Dizdar Park on August 5th. Christine Leong will be our judge. All paintings selected must be for sale. No Rummage Sale This Year
As you already know, we do not plan to hold a rummage sale this year. However, we WILL hold one next year, so continue to save all those goodies you no longer want.
We hope, by skipping a year, we can accumulate top quality goods to sell. This is an important fund raiser for us, so don’t forget to save your good discards for our sale.

Art Smart Classes
We are already planning our next art sessions for the “young folks.” There is some question as to holding the classes in
the fall, or making them available for the children during the summer months when they are looking for “fun” things to do.
If you know of children who would be interested in attending these classes, and WHEN, please let Christine know, or call Sandy Paden.

President’s Message
We had a wonderful show by the Village Painters from Leisure Village. Judging by the many beautiful paintings and the
turnout at the reception, it was a great success.
At our monthly painting demonstration, I was able to paint an eagle in record time and to show some finer details of
freehand style of Chinese watercolor. Our next demonstration will be held on Wednesday, March 15th, with artist Judy
Klement showing us her techniques with soft pastels.
The current show in our art center is the “Rising Star Show” of local middle schools. Don’t miss this one; you’ll be surprised by the work of these young artists. (The show ends Sunday, March 5th.)
Coming up in March we are looking forward to the High School Art Show featuring artworks from local high schools. The date will be March 11-19. Our Art Smart program for children 6-11 had a good start with 13 students. These young artists will
show their works at the Center from March 25 to April 2. Please mark it on your calendar to come by and see for yourself
how truly talented these young artists really are.
Are your paintings ready for our Annual Spring Membership Show? Bring-in time is 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8th. The title for this show is “Artful Memories” and it will be judged by Cynthia Minet, an art professor at Moorpark College.
Thanks to generous donations from the Museum Quality Framing of Camarillo, a local merchant, and Gold Lion Asian Gift
Store in Ventura, we are going to have our “People’s Choice” awards again. When you come by to see the show, be sure to
vote for your favorite painting/artist.

We’re delighted to have our very own president, Christine Leong, as our demonstrator this month. We have all admired
her beautiful works and now we have the opportunity to see how she does it!
Christine, a native of Hong Kong, has a passion for Chinese watercolors. Her painting style demonstrates soft, lyrical
brush strokes; her specialty is in kois and florals. Her artworks reflect unique and original Chinese watercolor images
that combine Asian and Western painting techniques.
Since coming to our area in 2002, Christine’s paintings have been juried in shows and art walks in Ventura County and
has won many awards, including 1st place 2004 Ventura County Fair Professional Watercolor Division. She has exhibited
extensively round the world.
She will demonstrate her techniques for us on Wednesday, February 15th, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free to members; $5
for non-members.
