President’s Message

Miracles do happen! We have a new president for 2006. We all owe immense gratitude to Christine Leong who loves the Camarillo Art Center and has agreed to become our next president. I have let her know that we will all help. THANK YOU!!

This is my last newsletter article. I have really enjoyed being president. I thank each and every one of you who have done so much these last years. I would take several pages to list all of you individually and document your many contributions.

Special thanks to all of the board members (Nelda Gruenthal, Andrew Luu, Jo Schreiner, and Anita McDermott), the chairpersons listed in the newsletter, and my husband, Bill. I couldn’t have done it with out you!

I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year, filled with many blessings.

Linda Ramelli

Roster For 2006

We are so pleased that Christine Leong has consented to be our president for 2006. Brian McCall will be assisting her and the Board has elected him to be a Member at Large on the Board, with voting rights.

The Chairpersons roster is almost complete. We still have three positions to fill:

Hospitality chair (refreshments)
Nominating Committee chair
Telephone Committee chair

Next Membership Show

Our next show, for members only, will begin on January 8th and will run through the 29th. Please bring one or more of your paintings to display on Saturday morning, January 7th, from 9 to 11 a.m.

The Board has decided that the gallery will be closed to the public on the day pictures are brought in so that we have the afternoon to display them appropriately.

The show will be called, “New Beginnings.” This will be a non-judged show, so just bring your favorites in for everyone to enjoy.

Rummage Sale

The Board has decided NOT to hold a rummage sale this year. However, we WILL have one in 2007.

Having the sale is a tremendous amount of work. It is most successful when we have a lot of quality merchandise to sell. Soooo, put aside those things you don’t want anymore and save them for our next sale which will be in June of 2007. We’ll hope all our effects will produce a lot more revenue!

Membership Dues

For most of us, membership renewals are due in January. You will find the date for your renewal on your address label.

Membership now runs for a full year from the time of enrollment, so our newer members will be reminded during the year.

The membership fee remains at $25 for one member, $40 for a couple, and $250 for a Life Time Membership. Your renewal form will be in January’s newsletter.

Want To Hold A One-man Show?

Our gallery schedule is not yet complete for the new year. We have an early slot available – February 4th through the 19th. If you have been considering holding your own show, this may be the time for you to consider it. There is no charge for the use of the gallery. We only ask that you donate 20% of sales to CAC.

Next Demonstration Meeting

Our next demonstration meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 18, 2006.

Our guest artist will be Annette Hammer, who will demonstrate how to paint landscape in oil.

Meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Free to members, guests $5.

November, 2005

President’s Message

Congratulations and thanks to Sandy Paden for doing such a wonderful job as chairperson of our Fall Show. The show, beautifully hung as usual by Sue Tiffany, opened on Saturday, November 5th and will close on Sunday, November 20th, with a reception and awards.

We’ve added something for this show. There will be additional prizes given to the top three works chosen by the gallery visitors who cast their ballots between now and the twentieth. We’ve obtained some prizes donated by area business, so be sure and come by the Center to vote for your favorite. The show contains so much beautiful artwork that we need to encourage as many people as possible to enjoy the show. In addition to the People’s Choice Awards, we have comments from the judge, Yoka Yohanna. She critiqued each piece entered in the show. Artists can request a copy of her comments.

A lot of work has been done to make this show special. You can contribute by inviting your friends and neighbors to come view the show with you. Congratulations to all the winners and to each artist participating in the show.

It has come to the board’s attention that Christine Leong’s classes on Friday mornings are being bothered by interruptions. Students have complained. Please try and remember that when classes are in session, the Center has been reserved for that purpose and plan to visit at another time. There is a scheduled posted on the bulletin board in the hallway and on this web site under Calendar should you need to know when classes are being held. We appreciate your cooperation.

We’ve been waiting for one of our 106 members to come forward and volunteer to be president in 2006. Please consider taking on this position. As I have stated in earlier newsletters, you will have an incredible amount of help always available to you. If you’re good at delegating, you could get by with minimal effort. If you’re even remotely interested, please call me at home, so we can talk about it. The Camarillo Art Center needs YOU. We really need to have a president. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks to each and everyone of you who has agreed to serve as a chairperson in 2006. Our list is growing and your response has been wonderful. We’ve even created ad filled some new positions. It is always gratifying to be part of an organization where so many members contribute.

Welcome, New Members!

We are happy to welcome Nicholas Clark and Bill Margulies into our membership. We look forward to meeting them soon and their participation in our many events.

We currently have 106 members!

Please Note…

As you may know, CAC occasionally makes the gallery available to art instructors during the weekdays as a source of income and to benefit our members.

The instructors may hold classes during the week, during which time we ask that they not be interrupted by visitors. Obviously, this is distracting to both the teacher and the students. The gallery is THEIR SPACE while they are using it.

If you need to get into the kitchen or storage room, please enter through the kitchen door and do not go into the gallery while a class is in session.

We appreciate your cooperation!!

You Are Cordially Invited

To attend the reception for our Fall Membership Show on Sunday, Nov. 20th, 2 to 4 p.m. Awards will be presented to the winners at 3:30 p.m., after which the artists may take their work(s) home. The winners are asked to leave their works for the “Winners 2005” show which will run December 3rd through the 18th.

If you have won any awards (including those outside of CAC) during the current year, we would like to have you enter those works in this show.

Farmers’ Market

We’re putting out a call for more of our artist members to display at the Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings. We have the screens and canopy available for your use. Some of our artists have been successful in selling their works at this location.

If you are interested or would like more information, please call Anita McDermott.

Ocober, 2005

President’s Message

The annual dinner meeting on Sunday, September 18th, was really wonderful. It all began with the front steps which were decorated with beautiful flowering pots by Merrill of Merrill’s Pots. The garden court was more exceptional than usual as the artists hung their paintings on the fence. The food, beginning with hors d’ouevres provided by Jerry Clifford, was truly delicious. Spumoni’s Restaurant served a memorable meal which include bread baked on their premises. My only regret is that some of you missed such a grand event. Special thanks are due to “the salad girls,” Nobuko McClure, Shirley Kremke and Patty Ecker. Also, thanks to Bill Ramelli, Joseph Benti, Ken Kremke, B.J. Fan, Jerry Clifford, Anita McDermott, John Colby, Jo Schreiner and Andrew Luu for helping to set up beforehand and/or cleanup afterwards. I hope I didn’t leave anyone out. You guys are wonderful!

The Demonstrators’ Show was a big success. The reception was especially nice due to a very generous donation from Carl Gluck and an in-store credit from Trader Joe’s. Thank you to Nobuko McClure for all your help with the reception.

It has come to my attention that gallery has occasionally not been open on a Saturday or a Sunday. Please call Margret Schuurs, gallery sitter chairperson, or someone on the board, if you become aware of this. We’ll try to get someone to sit. Thanks for your help.

We still do not have a president for 2006. Please reconsider becoming president. If you aren’t able to be president, call another member who you think could do the job. We really need your help.

The Board has created some additional chairperson jobs for 2006. If your phone rings, please say yes or, better yet, call and volunteer. The Camarillo Art Center needs you!

On a more philosophical note, there was a wonderful article on Chief Justice Rehnquist in the Los Angeles Times on September 7, 2005. They were talking about how he stressed the importance of having hobbies and living a full life.

“He pursued his own hobbies even when they drew unwanted attention. During President Carter’s State of the Union address one year, it was noted that Rehnquist alone was missing from the justices in the House chamber. Rehnquist intended no slight to the President, it was just that the speech occurred on the same night as his painting class at the Arlington County recreation center.”

I loved reading this and also an obituary of an artist, Kay Ameche, who died recently at the age of 101.

She started to paint in her 60’s. Her first two paintings sold for $250, and by the early 1990’s they were going for $5000 to $10,000 each. Let’s keep right on painting because a balanced life is wonderful and we might become famous.

October Demo

On Wednesday, October 19th, we will have our final demonstration meeting of the year, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the gallery.

Lynn Byrne Simon is an artist member of the Camarillo Art Center.

Lynn studied art at the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. Then, after moving to New York in 1970, she studied at The New School in Manhattan, while maintaining a career in human resources. In 1976 she moved to Los Angeles and continued her art studies at Santa Monica College. In 1997 she moved to Camarillo. Lynn is also a member of the Westlake Village Art Guild.

She will demonstrate (in oil) how she paints glass objects, giving them reflections and the illusion of being able to see through them.

Thursday Painters Show

Is currently running at the gallery. A group of member artists meet on Thursday mornings from 9 to 11:30 to paint and enjoy the company of fellow artists.

The show is a compilation of their accomplishments over the past several years. The paintings are lovely. Plan to stop by to see and admire their works before the show ends of October 16th.

Farmers’ Market

Anita McDermott, who chairs this event, needs more artists who will be willing to exhibit their works at the Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings.

We have the screens and canopy available, and sometimes we can use Ray Ayers’ space, so a canopy is then not needed.

All you need is a resale license which is free and easy to obtain by calling 1-800-400-7115 (the Board of Equalization) or by going online at www.boe.ca.gov. The only requirement is that you pay the 7.25% sales tax on a once-a-year basis.

Fall Membership Show

Our Fall judged membership show is fast approaching and we hope you’re ready for it! Entries will be taken on Saturday, November 5th, from 9 to 11 a.m.

The reception will be held on the last day of the show, November 20th, from 2 to 4 p.m. Prizes will be given out at 3:30 p.m., after which you may take your paintings home.

Annual Dinner Meeting

Forty-two people attended our annual dinner meeting and it was a very enjoyable, social evening. The food from Spumoni’s was delicious and was enjoyed in our garden court which was decorated with many paintings. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this a success!

Welcome new members!

We are happy to report that we now have 104 new members!! We welcome the following and look forward to their participation in all our activities:

Mee Sook Yoo
Mia Mead
Jane Tor
Keith James
Jerry Clifford

September, 2005

President’s Message

WOW! You’re not going to believe this!!! Our third annual dinner will be on Sunday, September 18th at 4 p.m. in our beautiful garden court. Those of you who attend will enjoy an incredible Italian meal accompanied by wine and catered by Spumoni’s Restaurant. The dinner will consist of fresh baked bread, olive tapanade, Cannelloni Fiorentina, Spaghettine Bolognese and salad. Those of you who attend the dinner will receive a coupon which will entitle you to dine at Spumoni’s any time until November 30th – pay for your first entree and get your second entree (of equal value or less) for free!! You don’t want to miss this dinner. If you haven’t had an opportunity to eat at Spumoni’s, their food is delicious. They’re new in Camarillo and are located at 300 Lantana, near the Paseo Camarillo Theatre.

In addition to fine dining, you will be surrounded by fine art as each member will be asked to bring one or two of their own works of art to hang in the garden court during dinner, and then in the gallery until September 25th.

To make a reservation, please send a check payable to CAC for $7 a person by Friday, September 16th at the latest. (You may bring a guest if you like.) Only those who pay in advance will be able to attend. Attendance will be limited due to space, so get your checks in early.

There is so much going on this month at the Center. We have an awesome demonstrators’ show which will close on Sunday, September 11th, with a reception at 2:30 p.m. (Our thanks to Carl Gluck who is treating us to all the goodies at this reception! Carl chaired this event.)

ART SMART, our new program of art classes for children ages 6 to 12, made possible by a grant from the City of Camarillo, will begin with an Open House on Saturday, September 10th, from 10 to 12 noon. This will be a hands-on experience for kids and parents. Classes, taught by our very own Christine Leong, will begin on September 29th.

With all this wonderful, exciting “stuff” going on at CAC, we still have yet to find a new president to take over in January of 2006. The CAC is flourishing. We have 100 members as of this writing! I can’t imagine there isn’t someone who will step up to the plate and take on this job. It would be a real tragedy and a loss to the community and to each of our members if we were unable to continue. We need a president who will work with all of us to keep the Camarillo Art Center going strong.

Linda Ramelli

Annual Dinner Meeting

You’re cordially invited to attend our Annual Dinner Meeting to be held on Sunday, September 18th, at 4 p.m.

We need your reservation in advance, so please mail us your check for $7 per person. You are welcome to bring a guest.

We also ask our artist members to bring along an artwork to display in our garden court, where the dinner will be held. Following the dinner, the art will be hung in the gallery for display the following weekend, when you can return to pick up your work on Sunday, Sept. 25th, at 4 p.m.

We hope you will plan to attend and enjoy the fellowship, the good food, and meet other members.

Congratulations

To our members, Christine Leong, who won a second place prize at the Ventura County Fair, in the professional category. Congrats also to Sandy Paden for winning a 2nd and 3rd prize, and Mike Mancusi a prize in the amateur category.

Welcome to new members!

We are happy to welcome the following new members to our organization:

Bert Collins (rejoined)
Diane Severtsen (rejoined)
Laura Stenburg
Mary “Connie” Reynolds
James Wilson

A Special Thanks

To Marcia Edwards who spends much time keeping our garden court looking beautiful. We do appreciate your efforts!!

Thanks also to Pam Solakian who hazarded creaky chairs to climb up and clean the lights, etc., prior to the pastel show. Pam is also responsible for getting such great demonstrators for our meetings. We couldn’t get along without her.

Demonstrators’ Show

There is a beautiful show of our past demonstrators’ artwork in the gallery at this time. The show ends Sunday Sept. 11th. A reception will be held Sunday, 2:30 to 4 p.m. Many thanks to Carl Gluck for providing the refreshments. He chaired this show despite his wife’s serious illness. We are happy to report Mrs. Gluck is now home and getting better. We all wish her a speedy recovery!!

Fall Judged Show

Are you ready??? We have two judged shows per year, and our second one is coming up in November. Sandy Paden is chairman of this event.

It will run November 5th through the 20th, with take-in on Saturday, Nov. 5th, 9 to 11 a.m.

The show will be called, “The Land I Love.” However, this is NOT a theme show; you are welcome to bring art of any subject matter. There will be an entry form in next month’s newsletter with all the details.

The local merchants who donated these prizes are Lassen’s Natural Foods & Vitamins, Total Woman Fitness, and Happy Dog (pet grooms). Many thanks to these generous donors.

Thursday Morning Painters

A group of our members meet each Thursday morning to paint and enjoy the fellowship. They will be holding their very own exhibit of their works starting October 1st, through the 16th.

Be sure to stop by and admire their talent!

ART SMART!

CAC is going to provide art classes for children this Fall! On Saturday, Sept. 10th, there will be an Open House for children and their parents to see what will be offered in the classes. They will be able to register on this day and also on Saturday, Sept 24th, 10 a.m. to noon.

Our very talented member, Christine Leong, will be the teacher, and she will have at least one adult assistant at each class.

Grade 1-3 will meet Mondays, 3 to 4:15, starting October 3rd, through November 21st.

Grades 4-6 will meet Thursdays, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. September 29th through November 17th.

If you have children or grandchildren who would be interested in attending, please let them know and plan to attend the Open House or register on the 24th.

August, 2005

President’s Message

The Camarillo Art Center needs you !!!!!!

We are still looking for a president who will take over in January 2006. Time has a way of flying by and January will be here before we know it. We are becoming increasingly concerned. It would be difficult, if not impossible, for the Camarillo Art Center to exist without a president.

I wrote in the newsletter last month about how much the members of our board do to help the CAC run smoothly. Please know that in addition to the consistent efforts of your board members, we have a long list of chairpersons who contribute. It contains an awesome group of members who take charge of many of the activities which make the CAC a very special place.

So, you may be thinking, with all this help, what does the job of being the president of the CAC entail? Basically, the president prepares the agenda and chairs the board meetings once a month, checks to see that the chairpersons are doing their jobs, and writes a monthly article for the newsletter.

Some of you may be thinking that being president would take too much of your time. The amount of time you spend being president is entirely up to you and depends a lot on how good you are at delegating and how much time you have available.

As I have said many times during the last two years, the CAC is an extraordinary organization with so many members who contribute and work together. So, please consider being our next president.

The Camarillo Art Center needs you !!!!!!

Linda Ramelli

Annual Dinner Meeting

We hope you’re all enjoying a nice summer. Before we know it, fall will be here and we are already planning our annual dinner meeting which will be held on Sunday, September 18th.

We will enjoy a catered dinner, good fellowship, and will elect the officers for 2006.

Pastel Art Exhibit

Starting Sunday, August 7th, and running through August 21st, members will be exhibiting their pastel paintings.

You are all cordially invited to attend the reception which will be held Sunday August 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibiting artists are: Bert Collins, Judith Crowe, Lynn Fonkelsrud, Christine Golden, Marsha MacDonald, Anita McDermott, Jo Schreiner, Diane Severetsen, Pam Solakian, Darla Warner, Rea Williams, James Wilson.

Demonstrators’ Exhibit

Many teaching artists have agreed to participate in our Center’s 2005 Demonstrators’ Show, which is entitled, “A Tribute to our Demonstrators.” It will run from August 27th to September 11th. You are invited to a reception on September 11th from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Garden Court at the Center, and hope you can join us.

Those exhibiting will be: Steve Parr, Carol Merrick, Ruth Ellen Hoag, Don Fay, Judy McDonald, Diane Whitney-McHale, Cree Mann, Glenna Hartmann, Iris Carignan, Cathy Quiel, Judith Crowe, Pamela Hill Enticknap, Phyllis Doyon, and Sally Miller.

Exhibit Your Art!!

At the dinner meeting on September 18th, all our members will be asked to bring a painting or two to the Center and they will be hung in the Garden Court for our enjoyment.

Following the dinner, the artwork will be hung in the gallery and will be on exhibit through September 25th. Another opportunity to share our talents with others!

Thursday Painters’ Show

A group of our members meets every Thursday morning at the Center to paint while enjoying each other’s company. They will exhibit their paintings at a showing which will run from October 1st through the 16th. You’re invited to view!

And if you wish to join this group, get more info by calling John Colby.

“Spanking New & Wild Too”

Artists from the Phyllis Doyon studio and gallery will hold an exhibit of their works at our Center from October 22nd through the 30th.

You are invited to attend their reception on Sunday, October 30th, from 1 to 5. Hours at the gallery these two weekends will be from 1 to 5 p.m.

Farmers Market Art Booth

Beginning in September, the Camarillo Art Center will have a booth at the Camarillo Farmers Market. We have had an enthusiastic response to this, and many of our artists will be exhibiting.

We would like to have two artists each time, to share the work of setting up, etc. We may even exhibit more than once a month if there is enough interest.

A very special thanks to Carol Wright, vice-president of the Midstate Bank, for their donation of $500 to the Center for the purchase of the canopy to be used at the Farmers Market. We greatly appreciate their generosity!

And a very, very special thanks to Anita McDermott for making this all possible. If you would be interested in exhibiting at the Farmers Market, please call Anita for more information.

July, 2005

President’s Message

It is with deep regret that I write this to let you know that our President-Elect, Sandy Paden, has resigned due to family obligations. We were looking forward to having her be our next CAC president. However, we understand that her family needs her.

What this means is that we are, once again, actively recruiting a new president who will take over in January of 2006. My term of office, which began in January 2004, will be over. As many of you know, I assumed the presidency with great reluctance. I had only been a member of CAC for less than two years and had never been on the Board. I can only tell you, once again, that the CAC is an extraordinary organization in that so many people help out in so many ways. The continual efforts of so many of you make being the president a much easier job.

So, in case someone calls you and asks if you would like to be president, please know that when we say we’ll help, that we mean it and we will. Nelda Gruenthal, our vice-president, among other things handles publicity, contacts the demonstrators and makes beautiful flyers for all of our shows and demonstrations. Andrew Luu, our treasurer, keeps our financial records, pays the bills, picks up the mails, keeps the membership list up to date, and has developed and runs our website. Jo Schreiner, our secretary, takes minutes at our board meetings and writes, prints and mails our monthly newsletter. Anita McDermott, our past president, remains actively involved in CAC and is our grant writer. These are only the board members and the awesome list of what they do on a regular basis. We also have a lengthy list of chairpersons who help as well.

If any of you are interested in being our next president, please do not hesitate to call me. I would love to talk about the job and what it entails. Should you decide to be president, we will all work together just the way we now do.

Linda Ramelli

Gallery Show

Well-known local artist Ray Ayers is holding an exhibit of his works at our gallery July 9th through July 31st. You don’t want to miss this!

Just a reminder...

That we do not have demonstration meetings during the months of July and August. Our next demo will be held on the third Wednesday evening in September.

Once again we want to thank Pam Solakian for all her time and efforts in lining up such great artists to show us their techniques. She does such a great job!

Welcome, new members!

We are happy to welcome the following new members and look forward to their active participation:

Darla Warner
Rebecca Masters
Marsha MacDonald
Kris Kelkar

Diane MacHale Workshop

Diane MacHale, who gave us a demonstration of her oil painting techniques last February, will be holding a workshop at Graphaids (art supply store) in Agoura for two days, September 10 and 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The cost is $50 for one day, $70 for two days. Diane will donate 15 percent of this to the Camarillo Art Center for members who attend.

Diane’s artwork consists of a variety of abstracts, landscapes, and variations of floral. After vacillating between realism and impressionism, she has settled for both!

If you are interested and wish to sign up, email her at dimachale@aol.com

Art Smart

The committee for planning art classes for children, which will be held this fall, is continuing to meet. There will be classes for two age groups. An “Open House” will be held for parents and children on Saturday, September 10th, 10 to 12 noon, at which time they will be shown the curriculum to be offered.

Annual Dinner Meeting

Our Annual Dinner Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 18th. We will enjoy a catered dinner (more details next month) and will be electing our officers for 2006. Be sure to save this date! We had a wonderful time last year and look forward to this occasion. See you there!!

Farmer’s Market

We are charging ahead with our plans to have a booth at the Farmers Market in Camarillo, once a month on the first Saturday. We really need to know who will be interested in displaying their artwork in this venue. We would want at least two artists each time, as it would be difficult for one person to do it all.

Pastel Show

Eleven of our members will display their pastel art in our gallery from August 6th – 21st. A reception will be held Sunday, August 7th, 1 to 4 p.m. Do plan on attending!

June, 2005

President’s Message

We did it! Our annual rummage sale held on Saturday, June 4th, was a big success. Thanks, first of all, to all of you who donated “stuff” for us to sell. Secondly, thanks to all of the following members for working before the sale to sort and price, during the sale, and after the sale to clean up. We couldn’t have done it without your help. Thanks most of all to Delia Menes who did an outstanding job as chairperson! It was, as always, both exciting and rewarding to be part of an organization where so many members pitch in to help.

There’s a lot going on, as usual, at the CAC. “Anything Goes,” a members’ show, begins Saturday, June 11th. We will be taking in work from 9 to 12 noon. This show will end on Sunday, July 3rd. Put this date (July 3rd) on your calendar and join us in the garden court for root beer floats from 1 to 4 p.m. We will be having a special show honoring Ray Ayers, July 9th to the 31st. Carl Gluck and BJ Fan, co-chairs for our Tribute to Demonstrators Show, are busy organizing the show to be held from August 27th to September 11th. Our gallery schedule is now filled for 2005!

The “ART SMART” committee is hard at work. The next meeting will be on June 14th at 3:30 p.m. We are planning to start classes for children ages 6 – 11 in September or October.

Anita McDermott is busy working on arranging for the CAC to have a booth once a month at the Camarillo Farmers Market. This will be an opportunity for us to promote the CAC and for individual artists to sell their work.

We received a generous grant from the Meadowlark’s Service League (thanks to Anita McDermott, our grant writer extraordinaire).

Linda Ramelli

June Demonstration

Our final demonstration meeting until September will be held on Wednesday, June 15th, at 7:30 p.m. at the gallery.

Carol Merrick, a noted pastelist, will give a demonstration of her techniques in this medium.

Library Display

One of our members, BiJian (BJ) Fan is showing some of his origami works in the display case at the Camarillo Public Library for the month of June. If you get a chance, do stop by to see this interesting art form.

Art For Children

“Art Smart” is the title of the program we are calling our classes to teach art to children. The committee met again on May 19th. Their mission is to provide a setting where students learn basic art techniques and explore their creativity while having fun.

The classes will begin in September or October, for eight-week sessions, once a week. The classes will be led by professionally trained teachers and each class will have an art center volunteer to assist.

A Great Big Thank You

To Meadowlark Service League for their generous grant to the Camarillo Art Center! In return, we hope many of you will support them in their next fund-raiser, which will be a “wine tasting” day at the Camarillo Ranch House on Sunday, July 31st 1 to 4 p.m.

This event draws a big crowd! They have wine and food tasting (delicious!), live music, and it’s really lots of fun. Tickets are $60 each at the gate, but may be purchased ahead for $55 each. You may purchase tickets in advance through our art organization by calling Linda.

Farmers Market Art Sales

We are investigating the possibility of selling our art at the local Farmers Market, possibly once a month. Would you be interested in doing this? You can have a showing of just your own works or possibly along with another artist. Sellers must have a business license which can be obtained (reasonably priced) at the City Hall.

If you are interested or would like more information, please call Linda or Anita. A tent roof would be provided to protect your artwork from the sun.

Anything Goes!

As mentioned in our last newsletter, we are having a members-only art show which will run from June 11th to July 3rd. This is NOT a judged show, just an opportunity to show some of your favorite paintings. Take-in will be Saturday morning, 9 to 12 noon. We will have labels available that you can fill out to hang next to your paintings, or bring your own.

On the last day of the show, July 3rd, we’ll have a “Root Beer Float” reception from 1 to 4 p.m., after which you can take your paintings home.

This should be a fun occasion and will give us a chance to visit with our friends and meet some new ones too. Mark your calendar today!

President’s Message

We had a wonderful turnout for our spring show reception. It was exciting to see so many people in the gallery enjoying the show. The energy level was really high and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. If you’ve been missing out, watch your newsletter for upcoming reception dates.

The high school show will be on May 7th and 8th. The show includes artwork by students from Camarillo High, Rio Mesa High, and St. Bonaventure High in Ventura. We will have a reception on Sunday, May 8th, and we’ll be awarding prizes to the students. Thanks to Jo Schreiner and Christine Leong for judging the show and to Don Hoffman and Lee Truman for making this all happen.

Christine Leong will have a show at the Art Center from May 14th to the 25th. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, May 15th, from 2 to 4 p.m.

“Anything Goes” will be a show open to all members from Saturday, June 11th, through July 3rd, pay attention to the show title and bring whatever artwork you would like to exhibit from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 11th. We will be serving root beer floats in the garden court on Sunday, July 3rd. Hope to see you there!

Our board meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. You are always welcome to attend. We would appreciate your feedback and suggestions. This month’s board meeting was very productive thanks to Carl Gluck who came up with a list of many fine suggestions toward improving future shows. We will be sharing our ideas in the next newsletter. In the meantime, we would welcome any and all ideas from you.

May Demonstration

Judith Crowe will give a pastel demonstration at our next meeting on Wednesday, May 18th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Center.

Judith took her first art lessons at age five. She continued to work and experiment with art during a career in education. She has worked with a variety of drawing and painting media, including oil, watercolor, colored pencil and pastels. She has studied extensively with many artists.

She works on location when possible, but usually paints in the studio from photos taken on travels. Common subjects are landscapes, seascapes, and portraits.

Judith prefers Ersta sanded paper which can take liquid without buckling and provides an excellent tooth for pastels. She works quickly, usually completing a painting in one sitting. She finds the rich applications of pure color to the ground provides a dynamic result in pastel paintings.

She is a member of numerous art associations and her works hang in corporate and private collections.

Upcoming Art Exhibit

Christine Leong, one of our “premiere” artist-members, will hold an exhibit for her works in our gallery starting May 14th and running until Sunday May 29th. A reception will be held on Sunday, May 15th, 2 to 4 p.m.

Christine, a native of Hong Kong, has loved to paint since she was a child, but her formal art education began in high school. Christine studied under Master Li Woon Ping who is famous for his brush techniques. Under his training she improved on her Chinese watercolor techniques, producing soft, lyrical brush strokes that are much evident in her kois and florals.

She has exhibited extensively around the world and become a Camarillo resident in 2002. She is a member of many art organizations.

If you haven’t seen her work before, be sure to see this exhibit! Her artistry is amazing.

High School Art Show

An exhibit of art by high school students is presently being shown at our gallery. Unfortunately it will be for only one weekend – May 7th and 8th. If you get this news in time, try to see this show. Some of the art is really amazing! What talented young people we have in the area. Thanks to Lee Truman and Don Hoffman for all their work in getting this show together.

Rummage Sale!

It’s time to sweep out all that stuff you don’t want anymore, clean out your closets and get rid of the clothes you keep insisting will fit you next year, and any items stored in your garage you think you might still use some day (but won’t), and is just collecting dust! How about getting rid of it and donating it to the CAC Rummage Sale coming up on Saturday, June 4th, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The gallery will be open to collect items on Thursday, June 2nd, 1 to 4 p.m., and Friday, June 3rd, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We need many volunteers to make this a successful money-raising event. We need folks to price, sell, and (especially if you own a pickup) to cart away the unsold items.

Our Sincere Sympathy

To Bettie Braunger on the recent loss of her husband. Our thoughts are with you.

Welcome To New Members

We are happy to welcome the following new members to the Camarillo Art Center:

Rita Angerman, John Greenwood, and Ellie Truitt.

We were sorry to lose one of our talented artists, Steve Parr, whose work made him and his family move to Simi Valley. We hope he can still participate in our shows occasionally.

Alert! Alert! Alert! Alert!

Members, please note!!!

On the weekend following our rummage sale, we will have an exhibit of our members’ works which will run from June 11th to July 3rd.

This is NOT a judged show, just an opportunity to show some of your favorite paintings. Take-in will be Saturday morning, June 11th, 9 to 12 noon. It is being called, “Anything Goes!”

On the last day of the show, July 3rd, we’ll have a “Root Beer Float” reception from 1 to 4 p.m., after which you can take your paintings home.

This should be a fun occasion and will give us a chance to visit with our friends and meet some new ones too. Please put this on your calendar today!

April, 2005

President’s Message

I hope you’re enjoying the beautiful springtime weather. Our annual spring show, “The Great Outdoors,” is up and will end with reception on Sunday, April 24th. Our thanks to Carl Gluck for chairing the show and, after all that hard work, preparing a report for the Board which is filled with many good ideas for future shows. Thanks also to Sue Tiffany who, as always, did an excellent job hanging the show. We are also grateful to Phyllis Doyon who agreed at the last minute to judge the show. We were all very impressed and will utilize what we learned from her in the future shows. Thanks to all of you for creating such a successful show. Don’t miss it!

We’d like to give our artists a chance to share their expertise with the children of Camarillo. With the pressure to increase test scores in the schools, children are seldom taught art anymore. Join us as we launch our new program, “ART SMART!” by completing the application. In addition to teachers, we are looking for volunteers to assist in the classroom. Join us and help make a difference by enhancing the education of the children in our community while sharing your special skills.

We also need your help with our gallery schedule. We still have spaces available for shows in June, July and August. Please contact Nobuko McClure, if you’re interested in having a show or if you have other suggestions.

Christine Leong will have a show at Richard Lu’s Shanghai Restaurant & Gallery from April 8th to May 8th. The restaurant/gallery is located in the shopping center on Daily Drive, near Baja Fresh. Their food is really good.

Please don’t forget to set aside “stuff” for our annual fundraiser rummage sale on Saturday, June 4th. Also, please remember that we have demos on the third Wednesday of the month. Our next one will be by Judy Koenig, a watercolorist, on Wednesday, April 20th. And finally, enjoy the following article written by Nelda Gruenthal.

The Zen Of Gallery Sitting

If you find your life coming unhinged, you might think seriously about gallery sitting. Why would a sane person suggest that someone without a second to spare consider volunteering their time? Because it is truly a Zen experience. (Unless, of course, you try to gallery-sit on a reception day.)

Consider this: You unlock the door and enter into a perfectly quiet and beautiful environment. After putting out the flag and signs, sit down and just enjoy the quiet and scenery. Beautiful paintings to enjoy at your leisure. A fantastic garden in which to stroll. The music that I found on tape was absolutely wonderful, or bring your own. There is a refrigerator and microwave if you wish to bring snacks.

Occasionally someone will stroll in and you can watch them enjoy the paintings. You can have very interesting conversations. Some people are regular visitors, some just curious. All are very nice.

Bring a friend, or better yet, bring something with which to paint or sketch. Catch up on your reading, knitting, crocheting, scrapbook, embroidering. Catch up on correspondence or just sit and gaze out the window. What a wonderful way to spend your time. Before you know it, the three hours are up and it’s time to get back to reality. At least you o back refreshed and ready to tackle your world.

April Demo

Our next demonstration meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 20th, at 7:30 p.m. Judy Koenig will be our guest demonstrator and she will show us how to apply gold leaf embellishments to our artwork.

Judy is a professional watercolorist who has been teaching, jurying shows, and is on the board of the California Gold Coast Watercolor Society. Her works are realistic and representational, with an emphasis on capturing light, and she exhibits a strong sense of color, composition and nostalgia.

High School Art Show

Be sure to stop by the gallery during the weekends of April 30th and May 8th to admire the artwork of our local high school students. There are many talented artists among them. Do take some time to see their works and admire them! This show is being chaired by Lee Truman and Don Hoffman, and we thank them for all their efforts.

Rummage Sale!!!

Our big annual fundraiser is coming up on Saturday, June 4th. Please bring your donations to the Center Friday evening or Saturday morning for pricing and sale. (More details in next newsletter.) We will take just about everything, including clothing, but no big items such as furniture (due to lack of space.) We also need LOTS OF HELP!!! Delia Menes is chairing this event, and she needs help pricing, selling, cashiering, etc. etc.

March, 2005

President’s Message

I hope you’ve been enjoying the beautiful clouds. They keep reminding me of Diane MacHale’s demo in February. Her cloudscapes, done in oil, are really magnificent! Some of the clouds, especially the week following her demo, looked just like her paintings. We are so very fortunate to have demonstrators of her caliber presenting at the Camarillo Art Center.

The current show at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University in Malibu features Dale Chihuly, the world-renowned glass artist. The exhibit and the eighty-minute video are well worth the drive. The free exhibit runs through March 20th and is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11 to 5 p.m.

We’re fortunate to have gifted artists right at our own center. Don’t miss Nobuko McClure and Satoko Yamamura’s show which runs through Sunday, March 6th. Their paintings are wonderful. Everyone seemed to really enjoy their reception on Sunday, February 28th. There were quite a few people and the food was delicious and included sushi made by Nobuko nd pastries made by Satoko. Thanks to Nelda Gruenthal’s great publicity work, we had an article in the Star Free Press which drew many first-time visitors.

We now have 74 members who have paid their dues which is really good for this time of year. Thanks to all of you for sending in your checks.

Linda Ramelli

March Demo Meeting

Our March demonstration meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 16th, at 7:30 p.m. Our demo artist will be Stacy Vosberg.

Born and raised in Southern California, Stacy sailed from California to Hawaii where she lived and worked for Windjammer Cruises. From there she moved to Honduras where she worked for a private charter boat company. Her years of experience working in the outdoors and on the ocean instilled a deep love and respect for nature. This passion is reflected in her various forms of artwork where she captures the beauty of nature.

Stacy began painting at the young age of ten. Over the years she has continued to grow and progress in her artistic talents. In addition to painting on canvas, she also paints murals on walls. She recently completed a large mural in Costa Rica for a private home in the rainforest. Stacy’s paintings can be found in numerous private and public collections within the continental United States, Hawaii, Europe, Central America and Australia. Her high quality reproductions and ceramic originals are offered at a price that is affordable to the average household.

Our Gallery Has Openings

We still have some openings in our gallery schedule during the summer months, from June 11th to September 25th. If you are interested in having a display of your works (together with another artist, if you like), the gallery is available during the above dates.

Upcoming Events

Our Thursday Morning Painters’ Group will be holding their very own show October 1st – 16th.
This group of artists meets every Thursday morning from 9 to 12 to paint and enjoy the fellowship of others. You are most welcome to join them.

Our Annual Dinner Meeting

Has been scheduled for Sunday, September 18th. Put this on your calendar right now so you won’t forget! We all had fun at the last meeting and look forward to sharing it with you again.

A Get Well Message

Sandy Paden, our President-elect, will be undergoing back surgery. We all wish her a very speedy recovery!!

Spring Membership Show

Our Spring (judged) Membership Show will be held April 2nd through the 24th. Please bring in your artwork on Saturday morning, the 2nd, between 9 and 11 a.m. The reception will be held on Sunday, April 24th, from 1 to 4 p.m.

February, 2005

President’s Message

The best news at the Camarillo Art Center is that John Colby will be back heading up the Thursday morning painting group beginning February 11th. He is on the mend and recovering following surgery. I always knew that John was one of those people that I think of as unsung heroes. However, I didn’t stop to think about the many things he does to keep the Center running smoothly until he wasn’t around, and I had to put the trash can out on Thursday mornings! This is just one of many tasks John quietly gets done. Thank you, John, for giving so very much to us for so many years.

Some more good news…We have a new heater which warms up the Center quickly. It also has a timer which shuts the heater off after sixty minutes, so we will no longer have to worry about huge gas bills.

You may notice a blue sticker on the front of your newsletter reminding you to pay your dues. We also have enclosed an envelop for your convenience. Paying your dues for the year, twenty-five dollars, could well be the best investment you make this year. For this price you may attend any of the demonstrations for free, enter any of our members’ shows, compete for cash prizes, attend receptions, paint with other artists, and enjoy exhibiting your artwork. The possibilities are endless.

We’re in the very beginning stages of a new project. We have applied for a grant from the City of Camarillo to enhance our art program for children. We are forming a committee and we’ll begin meeting soon. We would welcome your participation.

I hope you’re busy creating works of art for our annual Spring Membership Show. This is a members only judged show which will begin on April 2nd. We will have both a professional and amateur category and cash prizes. The theme will be “The Great Outdoors.” We are pleased to welcome Carl Gluck as the new chairperson for this show. He is already hard at work.

We had a great turnout-31 people-for Steve Parr’s January demonstration of digital art with computers. It was amazing to watch how complicated the process is and how much is involved. Our next demonstration will be on February 16th by Diane McHale, an oil painter.

Linda Ramelli

February Demo Meeting

This month’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 16th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Art Center.

Artist Diane McHale will give a demonstration called “Skyscapes in Oil.” Her artwork consists of a variety of abstracts, landscapes, and variations of floral. After vacillating between realism and impressionism, she has settled for both! A common thread throughout her work is her “blending technique” used in almost every piece. She strives to provoke an emotional response from the viewer/art collector by creating vibrant color combinations and avoids too much detail, for that is where her paintbrush loses effect.

Diane’s work is currently displayed at Image Arts Gallery in Westlake Village, and this year she plans on participating in the Pasadena Art Festival, the T.O. Art Fest, Malibu Arts Festival, and other local shows.

Upcoming Exhibits

Member Jeni Bate will hold a one-person show of her works in our gallery on the weekends February 5th and 12th, entitled “California Skies and Birds.” Her primary medium is pen and ink. A reception will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5th, 1 to 4 p.m.

A two-person show exhibiting the works of Nobuko McClure and Satoko Yamamura will run February 19th through March 6th. A reception will be held on Sunday, Feb. 27th, 1 to 4 p.m. Nobuko’s medium is oil and acrylics, and Satoko works in watercolor. Do plan on stopping by to admire their beautiful paintings.

Art for Children

A committee is being formed to plan an “Art for Children” program. Decisions must be made about scheduling dates, course of instruction, etc. President Linda Ramelli, Nelda Gruenthal and Anita McDermott will be on this committee and they urgently request all those who would be interested in participating (especially qualified art teachers) to join them in this important endeavor. We want to introduce art to our children and encourage those already interested in art to get instruction.

A Note of Thanks

To all my friends at the Center, thank you for your prayers, concern, and cards during my recent surgery, hospitalization and recovery.

John Colby

Spring Membership Show

Our Spring Membership Show (judged) will be held from April 2nd to the 24th. Carl Gluck is chairing this event which will be called “The Great Outdoors.” There will be an equal number of prized in both amateur and professional categories. An entry form will be included in the March newsletter.

January, 2005

President’s Message

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

What a year this is going to be! The new schedule of demonstrators for 2005 and the gallery schedule through June 4th (our annual Rummage Sale) is already on the bulletin board at CAC. Thank you to Pam Solakian and Nobuko McClure. So, we’re off and running with our first show, “New Beginnings,” opening Saturday, January 8th, and continuing until Sunday, January 30th.

Be sure to check out the list of chairpersons. The response from our members was overwhelming. We thank each and every one of you, both returning and new, for taking on a chairmanship. We couldn’t do it without you. Our gratitude and a warm welcome to our new chairpersons. We are looking forward to working with you this year.

For me, the best part of being involved with the CAC continues to be the friendships I’ve made and the camaraderie we enjoy. Please don’t hesitate to join us. There are plenty of opportunities to participate. Perhaps you’d like to gallery-sit, make phone calls, do some gardening, attend a demo, paint on Thursday mornings…The opportunities are endless. We guarantee that you’ll have fun.

Linda Ramelli

Demo Meeting

We start the 2005 demonstration season on Wednesday, January 19th, at 7:30 p.m. with a very special demonstration by Steve Parr: “Constructing Computer Art.” He will demonstrate three-dimensional modeling, computer rendering, computer-generated airbrushing, touchup, and special effects and filters.

This should be a very interesting demonstration. We should come out with a new respect for “Computer Art.”

‘New Beginnings’

Our next show, “New Beginnings,” is free and open to the public. This show will be non-judged. You may bring in your artwork (your choice, two or three of your favorites), on Saturday, January 8th, from 9 to 11 a.m. The show runs until January 30th.

A reception will be held on Sunday, January 30th, from 2 to 4 p.m.

This show is “just for fun,” so let us all share our art with everyone.
