Newsletter 2004
November, 2004

President’s Message
It’s hard for me to believe that my first year as the president of the Camarillo Art Center is rapidly coming to an end.
It’s sure been a busy year with some stress, but most of all lots of positive energy and a continuous feeling of gratitude
to all of you.
We’ve accomplished a lot. We’re growing – we now have 107 members. We have almost completed our building reconstruction.
We are in the process of getting a new heater; ours has given up the ghost and is beyond repair. It is, in fact, unsafe
to operate, so please don’t attempt to turn it on! We’ve had many wonderful exhibits and sold an impressive number of
paintings. I hope you had a chance to see Young Lee’s beautiful show.
My thanks to Bettie Braunger and Donna Clark, our Nominating chairpersons, for doing a simply outstanding job!!! They have
filled all but one of the chairperson positions for 2005. Thanks, too, to all of you who stepped forward and filled
the positions.
Thanks, also, to Pam Solakian for judging our fall membership show and for, once again, being hard at work scheduling our
demos for next year.
Please remember that dues are due in January. The board has streamlined the dues. We’ve noticed that CAC members are
wonderful about contributing to the Center in a myriad of ways so we will no longer have “contributing” and
“non-contributing” members.
This is the last newsletter for 2004. I wish each and every one of you a joyous holiday season and a very happy, healthy
and productive New Year!
Linda Ramelli

President’s Message
The Camarillo Art Center is alive and well—growing, in fact! We now have 102 members and yes, we’re having fun. There
were 43 of us at our second Annual Dinner Meeting. Lots of us brought paintings and hung them along the fence in the
garden court. We had a short business meeting to elect officers to serve on the Board of Directors for the coming year.
Fortunately for all of us, your current board members have all agreed to serve for another year and were unanimously
reelected. In addition, we have a new member of the board, Sandy Paden, who is our president-elect and will become
president in 2006. We welcome her to the board. Following a Mexican dinner served in the garden court, we hung our
paintings in the gallery for display the following weekend. A good time was had by all!
If you’ve been missing out on all the fun, we have a place for you. We need you to volunteer to help us out next year.
Our nominating committee will be calling this month to recruit chairpersons. We do have some openings for really important
jobs. We need a new Rummage Sale chairperson and a Gallery Sitters chairperson. Both of these jobs are critical positions
to the success of the Camarillo Art Center. The rummage sale is our only fundraiser and brings in much needed revenue. He
other position—Gallery-Sitters Chairperson—is also really important We need a person who will ensure that when we need
gallery sitters, they’ll be there.
Anita McDermott’s show, “The Pleasure of Pastels,” will be up until Sunday Oct 10th. I hope you get to see it. It’s a
wonderful show with pastel paintings from many places around the world where Anita has traveled. Congratulations to Anita
on not only having a beautiful show but a successful one as well. She has already sold four paintings.
We have some exciting events coming up. Our last demo for the year will be this month. The artist will be Glenna Kurz who
is a still life/landscape artist. On October 16th, Young Lee’s show, “The Beauty of Lines,” will open. We will be part of
the City of Camarillo’s 40th Birthday Open House which will be held on Saturday, October 23rd. And last but not least, we
all get a chance to exhibit our work and win a prize by entering the Fall Members’ Judged Show which begins on November
6th. Hope you’re busy painting!
Linda Ramelli

|
October Demo
Our October demonstration will be held on Wednesday, October 20th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Art Center.
Glenna Kurz, a still life/landscape painter, will demonstrate her impressionist landscape work in oils.
Glenna, although California-born, spent time with her parents in Grove, Oklahoma, where she received her first
commission, at age 14, to paint some wildlife pieces for a local restaurant. Since then, she has been a student,
crediting the late Frederick Grue for having taught her much, and she herself was a teacher at the Brandeis Art Institute
in Woodland Hills.
Married for more than fifty years, Glenna somehow found time to maintain her career while also successfully raising eight
children—five boys and three girls—plus 14 grandchildren.
Glenna’s artworks are represented by the Dassen Gallery in the Pacific Design Center in West Los Angeles.
|
|
Next gallery exhibit
One of our talented members, Young Lee, will be holding an exhibit of her works, called “The Beauty of Lines,” in our
gallery for three weekends, October 16th through the 31st. The gallery is open on weekends from 1 to 4 p.m.
|
|
Fall Membership Show
Our own judged Fall Membership Show will be held November 6th through the 21st.
Artwork is to be brought on Saturday morning, Nov. 6th, from 9 to 11 a.m. An reception and award presentations will be
held on the last Sunday (the 21st) from 1 to 4 p.m., after which you may take your paintings home.
There will be two categories this year—professional and amateur. Each member can enter two paintings, at $12 per entry.
This show will be followed by the Winners Show which will run December 4th through the 19th. We are hoping all those
who won awards at ANY show (Ventura County Fair, etc.) during this year will display their paintings in our Winners Show.
|
|
Camarillo celebrates 40 years!
The City of Camarillo will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its incorporation on Saturday, October 23rd. They have
asked us to celebrate with them (it’s OUR 40th anniversary too!) by holding an Open House on that day from 1 to 4 p.m.
The City will advertise this event. Linda has volunteered to provide the punch, and we would appreciate if you would be
willing to donate some cookies or little snacks to set out. Just bring them to the Center around 1 p.m. on the 23rd.

President’s Message
Good news!!! Our new roof is on. I went over to the Center on Sunday afternoon when it was 98 degrees in Camarillo,
opened the kitchen door and could not believe how cool it was. I was tempted to spend the afternoon! We will all be a lot
more comfortable during hot weather and warmer during cooler weather. The reconstruction continues this week with the
sliding door installation and replacement of the kitchen door threshold.
Attending John Colby’s show, “Ten Years Of Dabbling,” was a wonderful experience. Not only did I enjoy seeing his
paintings, but I was given an opportunity to see another side of John Colby – the adored grandfather. Listening to three
of his grandchildren discuss which paintings were their favorites and how empty their houses seemed without them, was
quite a tribute to John.
If you’re interested in attending a Camarillo Art Center board meeting, we are now meeting at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday
of each month. We would welcome your participation.
Our demo for September will be on Saturday (September 18th) this month. We changed it to a Saturday so that the artist,
Glenna Hartmann, would be able to demonstrate plein air. She is a gifted pastel artist and we are fortunate that she is
able to demonstrate for us. This demo, as are all our demos, is free to CAC members. Hope to see you there, and thanks,
once again, to Pam Solakian for making it happen!
Our second annual dinner meeting will be held on Sunday, September 19th, from 4 to 7 p.m. We will have a very short
meeting to elect officers for the coming year. Dinner will be catered by Money Pancho restaurant and enjoyed in our
beautiful garden court. We hope you have sent in your check by now and that you remember to bring one of your paintings
to hang in the garden court during dinner. It should be a wonderful afternoon.
Don’t forget about our Fall Members’ show which will be a judged show and begins on November 6th. We will have both an
amateur and professional category. There will be lots more opportunities for prizes! Hope you’re busy painting!
Linda Ramelli
|
|
Demonstration Meeting
Saturday, September 18th, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon, there will be a pastel demonstration by Glenna Hartmann, a well-known
pastel artist. She has been featured in “American Artists” magazine and the Forbes Galleries in New York. She exhibits
regularly at the Easton Gallery in Santa Barbara.
The demonstration will be held outdoors at the Las Posas Country Club. Bathrooms will be available. Bring a folding chair
or stool (there will be no chairs available there). A bottle of water would also be a good idea.
Carpools will leave the Mary Magdalene Catholic Church parking lot at 9:15 a.m. (corner of Las Posas and Crestview). We’ll
carpool to the site.
|
|
Dinner Meeting Sunday, September 19th
Don’t forget about our Dinner Meeting on Sunday, Sept. 19th, 4 to 7 p.m. We’ll enjoy a Mexican dinner catered by Money
Pancho restaurant. There will be a mix of hors d’oeuvres and drinks.
Look forward to a fun-filled evening in our beautiful garden and see the improvements to our Center building. The cost is
only $6 per person.
Also, bring along one of your paintings to hang in the garden, and we will then move them indoors to display the following
weekend. Hope to see you there!
|
|
Welcome, new members!
We’re happy to welcome five members to our fellowship of artists:
Myrna Bloom, Christine Golden, Lynn Fonkalsrud, Birgitta Reveles, and Bert Collins.
We look forward to meeting you and sharing our love of art.
|
|
Mark your calendar for
Anita McDermott’s exhibit of her paintings called “The Pleasure Of Pastel,” which will run for two weekends – October
2nd through the 10th. A reception will be held on Sunday, October 3rd, from 1 to 4 p.m. All welcome!!

President’s Message
This has been a busy, fun summer so far. Lee Truman had 208 people attend his exhibit and sold four paintings. The exhibit
of Cuban photography by Myrna Cambianica and Don Hoffman got off to a rousing start with a reception featuring Cuban music
and delicious, beautifully presented Cuban food. The gallery was crowded and the energy level was wonderful.
We have some exciting events coming up and busy days ahead. John Colby’s exhibit, “Ten Years of Dabbling,” begins on
Saturday, August 14th, and runs for three weekends. At the end of John’s show, we will be closing the Center for building
reconstruction from August 30th through September 16th.
Our building reconstruction will include: Removing the existing roof, installing insulation, and putting on a new roof. We
will also be repairing termite and dry rot damaged wood and installing a sliding glass door and, finally, painting. All of
this work is being done thanks to the generosity of Marion Jayne and the hard work of Anita McDermott who wrote to the City
of Camarillo requesting a grant, and they generously gave us the amount.
Mark your calendars now!! Send in a check today and reserve a space. We will be having a very special late afternoon
celebration to honor Marion Jayne. We will also be electing officers for the coming year. We want you there to help us
celebrate. You are welcome to bring a guest. Also, please bring one of your paintings to hang in the garden court and enjoy
a glass of punch or wine and a delicious Mexican dinner. We hope to see you on Sunday, September 19th, at 4 p.m.
Does the Camarillo Art Center have talented artists? Two of our members were juried into the professional show at the
Ventura County Fair and have both won prizes. Wow! Do we ever have some talented artists who are members of the Camarillo
Art Center.
Linda Ramelli

You’re invited…
To our Annual Dinner Meeting to be held on Sunday, September 19th,from 4 to 7 p.m.
The dinner will be Mexican cuisine catered by Money y Pancho. Cost will be $6 per person. We encourage you to invite
guests! We must have your reservation by Sept. 4th.
We will be honoring our long-time member, Marion Jayne. It will also be the grand reopening of our gallery after the
building improvements. There will also be election of officers for 2005.
Please bring one of your art works to the meeting; we will hang them on the fence in the garden court during our meeting,
after which they will be hung in the gallery to be on display the following weekend.
We look forward to seeing ALL of you at this our Second Annual Dinner Meeting!!
|
|
Do you have an email address??
In order to save our telephone committee a lot of work, we will be sending emails of special interest to our members, thus
saving about 50% in phone calls. If we don’t have your email address (and you have one), please let us know by
camarilloartcenter@yahoo.com.

“Ten Years of Dabbling”
John Colby will be holding a one-man exhibit of his paintings at our gallery from August 14th through the 29th. A reception
will be held Sunday, the 22nd, from 1 to 4 p.m.
John hopes you will all attend the show, and that we are “all around for the twentieth year of dabbling.”
Also, a reminder that John opens the gallery most Thursdays from 9 to 12 for those artists who enjoy the company of others
while they paint.
|
|
Congratulations!!
It’s an honor just to be selected to show at the juried art show at the Ventura County Fair, and to win an award is even
more awesome! Member Christine Leong won first place for her watercolor painting, and Jane Gorden won third place in the
ceramics division. Congratulations!!
|
|
Did you know…
The Camarillo Art Center sponsors art classes for children during the summer months. Member Jean Bricker teaches these
classes for six weeks. The children are enthusiastic over their artistic creations, and we thank Jean for all her hard work
with this project.

President’s Message
Congratulations one and all, and most especially, Shirley Kremke, who did a magnificent job as chairperson of our rummage
sale. Our thanks to all of your hard work (Jeni Bate, Jean Bischoff, Betty Braunger, Joan Burens, Karen Keys, Ken and
Shirley Kremke, Christine Leong, Young Lee, Bryan McCall, Nobuko McClure, Anita McDermott, Marjorie Nimtz, Jo Schreiner,
Shirley and Sharon Sharpe, Lee Truman, and Rea Williams). I hope I haven’t left anyone out. Also, thanks to those of you
who donated items to be sold. Would you believe that we made $1,307.84? !!!!
The best word I can think of to describe what goes on at the CAC is synergism which, according to the dictionary, is
“the interaction of elements that, when combined, produced a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual,
elements, contributions, etc.” We’ve got it! If you were involved in the rummage sale, you would have seen that synergism.
Members continually step forward and offer to do things without being asked, and somehow we not only get it done, but have
fun as well.
Our congratulations to Elisabeth McGrinn who took first place in the Ventura County Maritime Museum plein air competition.
Our gratitude to Julio Rocha for designing and painting a new “OPEN” sign.
For those of you looking for a local painting class, Judy Klement is teaching free art class for students aged fifty or
older on Wednesday from 1:30 to 4:30 at Villa Las Posas in Camarillo.
Don’t miss Lee Truman’s show which will hang until July 18th. His work is getting rave reviews and is truly awesome.
Everyone who’s seen the show is transfixed by the beauty of his paintings.
Also, beginning July 24th, we will have a show featuring both black and white and colored photographs taken in Cuba by
Ventura County photographers. This promises to be a wonderful show as well.

A tribute to Marion Jayne
Marion Jayne, who has recently contributed so generously to our organization, was interviewed by member Joseph Benti.
(see Tibute)
Marion will have her own one-person show in our gallery from September 18th to the 25th. We will also hold our Annual
Meeting & Dinner on Sunday, Sept. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. More info will be in the next newsletter, but be sure to put this
date on your calendar. It should be a fun day!
|
|
Congratulations !
The Ventura County Maritime Museum had their first ever Plein Air Competition in June. One of our members, Elisabeth
McGrinn, took first place for her painting, “Leo’s Flower Stand,” and the painting also sold!
|
|
Welcome new members
We are happy to welcome two new members to the Camarillo Art Center: Diane Ciapura and Elaine Stansfield. We look forward
to getting to know them.
|
|
The Cuban Connection July 24 – August 1
This show will be held at our gallery for two weekends, from 1 to 4 p.m. each day.
Two Ventura County photographers, Don Hoffman and Myrna Cambianica, present their views of contemporary Cuba via earthy
black & white and vibrant color prints – giving insight into the Island’s life and culture. This body of work was made
possible by a cultural exchange class sponsored by Ventura College.
A reception will be held on Sunday, July 25th, 1 to 4 p.m. Come and share their vision!
|
|
Ten years of dabbling
Our own John Colby will be holding a one-man exhibit of his paintings at our gallery from August 7th through the 29th. A
reception and “family” reunion will be held Sunday, August 22nd, 1 to 4 p.m.
John joined Dolores Pederson’s art class in September of 1994. It was sponsored by the Oxnard Adult Education School and
held at the Camarillo Airport. He was intrigued with the idea of oil painting that stirred up memories of his grandmother
Dora’s hobby. She painted from the late 1800’s through the 1960’s.
There must have been something in the genes, because two of John’s daughters are artists, too. He has been greatly
encouraged by his fellow classmates and members of the Camarillo Art Center. He hopes you enjoy the show, and that we are
all around for the twentieth year of dabbling.

|
Rummage sale a big success
Our recent rummage sale was a great success, netting $1,307.84! A great big “thank you” goes to Shirley Kremke who chaired
this event and spent many, many hours supervising it.
We also want to thank all those who helped with setting up and pricing, being on the sales floor on Saturday, and packing
up when it was over. And, of course, thanks to all of you good folks who donated the items that were sold.
|
|
A great big thanks
To member Julio Rocha for painting a new “OPEN” sign that will be used whenever our gallery is open to the public. He did
a great job, and we appreciate it so much.
|
|
Don’t miss
The current one-man art show at our gallery. July 17th and 18th are the last days you can see over 60 beautiful oil
paintings by Lee Truman, one of our members. Lee is a retired Methodist minister and has been painting most of his life.
He’s extremely talented!

President’s Message
June is off to a roaring start! The Camarillo Art Center continues to thrive and grow. We now have 86 members. Attendance
at our monthly demonstrations is really great – between 30 and 40. The quality of our demonstrations continues to be
excellent. Thanks are due to Pam Solakian who has done a great job selecting artists and setting up the demos for so many
years.
Our Garden Court continues to evolve. Thanks to Marcia Edwards, we now have many added features, all of which add to the
artistic design – including a ladybug in the purple flowerpot and the watering can filled with statice.
Art Camp for Kids, taught by Jean Bricker, will begin on June 14th. Please let your friends, relatives and neighbors know
about our excellent summer program.
Boy, are we busy! Our annual Spring Show begins on Saturday, June 5th, with the reception on the 13th at 1 p.m. Our annual
rummage sale will be held on June 26th. We hope you all have lots of great things to donate. We will be doing some cleaning
and organizing prior to the rummage sale and building renovation. If you have anything that belongs to you and not the
Center, please let us know.
We have had our first CAC outside art sale in May at the Las Posas Shopping Center. Congratulations to Anita McDermott who
sold three of her pastels, and to Karen Keys who sold a monoprint. A dozen of our members’ artwork were displayed. The
Board will be looking into future outside shows.
Congratulations to Julio Rocha who was one of six artists chosen in the Street Banner Competition by the City of Ventura.
Linda Ramelli

Coming in July: The Cuban Connection
Two photographers view contemporary Cuba – earthy photojournalistic black and white prints and vibrant color prints.
This body of work was made possible by a Ventura College sponsored class taught by Professor Bill Hendricks. This exhibit
will be held at our gallery from July 24th through August 8th.
|
|
Spring Membership Show
The current exhibit at our gallery is the judged Spring Membership Show which will run through June 20th.
The reception for the winners will be held on Sunday, June 13th, 1 to 4 p.m. Plan to attend and see all our beautiful
artwork.

|
It is with sadness
That we note the recent death of Richard Jones. Dick and his wife Ardeth were longtime and active members of our group.
They had moved away last year to be nearer to their children.
|
|
Rummage Sale
Our big fund raiser of the year is coming up soon! On Friday, June 25th, the gallery will be open from 9 to 4 p.m. to
accept your donations and pricing. Anyone who can help on that day will be most welcome. If the time is inconvenient for
you to “bring your stuff,” call Shirley Kremke and she will arrange to meet you at the gallery. You can also leave your
donations at the gallery anytime after the 20th.
We take just about everything (including clothing) except large items like furniture.
The sale will be held on Saturday, June 26th, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. We’ll need help on that day also, so please call
Shirley to tell her she can count on you. Packing up will begin at 3 p.m., and we’ll need lots of help then, too!
|
|
Shopping Center Exhibit
Many of our artist members exhibited at the Las Posas Shopping Center recently. We had many lookers and four paintings
were sold, AND it made folks aware that our Art Center exists!
We hope to be able to do this at least semi-annually and will let you know the next date, so you can exhibit, too.
|
|
Request for paintings
A business in Camarillo, “Body Tech” (car detailing) would like us to lend them several paintings to be hung in their
reception area. The paintings must be for sale.
If you would like to do this, please call Linda Ramilli for more information. Linda will make up a schedule: First come,
first served!
|
|
Building Renovation
Hurray! Anita McDermott has been busy making arrangements to have a new roof put on our building and a new sliding glass
door installed (to the Garden Court.) The trim will also be painted. This work will be done the first two weeks in
September, just in time for our 2th Annual Dinner Meeting on September 18th. Be sure to mark this important date on
your calendar.

President’s Message
WOW!!! It is with great pleasure and gratitude that I communicate with you about what’s been going on at the Camarillo Art
Center. You may recall mentioned in the April newsletter of our need for money for building restoration and ongoing
operating expenses. Prayers do get answered!
Thank you, Marion Jayne! Your very generous donation, along with grant money from the City of Camarillo, will enable us to
make badly needed repairs to our building, which includes a new roof.
It is difficult to know how to begin to express our gratitude. The board has decided that we will give a Marion Jayne Award
once a year to a Camarillo Art Center member. For those of us who have not had the privilege of knowing Marion Jayne, we
hope to have an interview in our next newsletter. Again, thank you so very much, Marion!
Congratulations to Christine Leong who recently won the President’s Award at the Simi Valley Fine Art, Photography and
Flower Show.
We have frames available at the Center. They’re an incredible buy and going quickly. James Reilly is selling them and
donating half of the proceeds to the Art Center. The price is unbelievable – one dollar for the small ones and two dollars
for the large ones. Just put your money in the envelop on the bulletin board. He has more frames and different sizes
available.
I hope you’re really busy painting. We have two shows coming up soon: The Las Posas Shopping Center Show and the Spring
Members’ Show.
Linda Ramelli

Display your art
At the Las Posas Shopping Center on Saturday, May 22nd. The Center is planning to participate in this event and we hope
you will all be able to contribute a painting or two for display.
We will set up our display racks in the courtyard between Earl Joseph Shoes and Ralph’s Supermarket, and you should bring
your artwork at 9 a.m., and plan to pick up at 2:30 p.m
Anita McDermott is coordinating this event and asks that you call her if you plan to display, as we need to know how many
racks to set up.
|
|
Gallery sitters needed
We all need to take a turn at gallery sitting so the Center can remain open on weekends. We need just one person to be
there to open up at 1 p.m., act as a greeter, and close up at 4 p.m. And of course you can bring a friend to keep you
company.
|
|
Welcome, new members!
We are very happy to welcome the following new members: Derek Devoe, Bonnie Owens, Todd & Dawn Anderson, Kyoko Asano,
and Myrna Cambianica. We look forward to their participation in our many events!
|
|
Summer Prelude
Coming Up! New Works by Camarillo Art Center Members! The show will run June 5th through the 20th. Original artwork
created within the past two years and never shown before at CAC. The show will be judged and prizes awarded.

|
Rummage Sale coming up
Are you busy cleaning out your closets and the garage for all the stuff you no longer need or want to keep?
Our annual fund-raiser, the RUMMAGE SALE, is coming up on Saturday, June 26th. We’ll need lots of help setting up and
pricing on Friday the 25th, starting at 9 a.m. Help will also be needed on the selling floor on Saturday. If you can help
with any of this, please call Shirley Kremke.
We will accept just about everything, including clothing, except large items like furniture, as we just don’t have the
room. Please bring your donations to the Center on Friday, June 25th.
|
|
Just a reminder…
Some of our members meet on Thursday mornings at the Art Center for a group painting session. You’re most welcome to join
them; this is not a class, just a quiet place to be with others and paint and enjoy the fellowship.

President’s Message
Spring has sprung! That means it’s time to start cleaning out closets, drawers, cupboards, etc., in order to have things ready for the Camarillo Art Center annual rummage sale.
Dust if you must, but when you need a break from all that cleaning, remember to pick up a paint brush. Our annual Spring Judged Membership Show will begin on Saturday June 5th.
Anita McDermott has done it again by submitting a grant to the City of Camarillo. Thanks to her efforts, the City Finance Committee will be recommending to the Council to help
restore our building. We need a new roof and repairs. We are currently exploring ways to come up with the additional money we will need to complete this project and funds for
ongoing operating expenses. Our thanks, once again, to Anita for working so diligently to enhance the Camarillo Art Center.
Our March demo by Elisabeth McGrinn was both enjoyable and practical as well. We all came away with some wonderful ideas: e.g., new sources for paints, using birch boards as
canvas, etc. Elisabeth began painting less than two years ago after attending a demo at our Art Center given by Sally Miller, who became her teacher.
Our next demonstration will be done by Pamela Hill Enticknap who is a watercolorist and will demonstrate portraiture on a prepared board. Hope to see you on Wednesday,
April 21st, at 7:30 p.m.

Get ready for judged show

show will run June 5 - 20, with take-ins on June 5th from 9 to 11 a.m.
There will be three categories: Oil/acrylic, watercolor, and other works on paper. Prizes will be for Best of Show, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize in each category.
|
|
April demo
Our demo artist this month is Pamela Hill Enticknap, who will give a demonstration of her techniques on “alla prima” watercolor portraits.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 21st, at 7:30 p.m. As usual, it is free to members; $5 for non-members.
|
|
Like to paint with others?
Just a reminder that we have folks who meet on Thursday mornings at the Art Center for a group painting session. We’re all welcome to join them; John Colby is the one to call if
you need more information. This is not a “class,” just a quiet place to be with others and “do your thing.”

Many thanks
To Julio Rocha who donated $100 to the Center for use in our Garden Court. Your gift is much appreciated!

President’s Message
It’s hard to believe that another month has flown by. I continue to be amazed and gratified by the level of involvement and
support of our members. A new ceiling fan with adjustable blades was purchased and installed, that should keep us cooler in
summer and warmer in winter. Our Building Usage Agreement and Building Opening & Closing Instructions were revised. Our
book for 2003 was audited. The outside sign is kept up-to-date and publicity is much better than before. Our members served
as art judges for the Academic Olympics held at the Camarillo Boys and Girls Club. The list goes on and on, making it
impossible to mention everyone. Our thanks to each and every one of you.
Thirty-two people attended our February demonstration by William (Bill) Foster, a Santa Barbara artist. His demonstration
and narrative were interesting and certainly well worth attending. At the end of the demo, Bill handed his check back and
asked that it be a donation to the Camarillo Art Center. We very much appreciate his generosity and we will spend the money
wisely. Watch for another new ceiling fan in the gallery!
At the demo we all sat up a little straighter as Bill Foster praised our website. Bill said he was calling other Santa
Barbara artists to take a look at our website because he was so impressed.
Christine Leong’s show, “Double Happiness”, will begin on March 13th. Christine will be demonstrating her work and
answering questions throughout her show.
Our next demonstration will be done by one of our members, Elisabeth McGinn, on Wednesday, March 24th, at 7:30 p.m. Hope
to see you there.

Schedule Changes
Our annual big fund-raiser, the rummage sale, which is normally held on a weekend early in June, has been re-scheduled to
Saturday, June 26th. Start saving all those things you no longer want; we take just about everything, including clothing,
except large items like furniture.
The Spring Membership Show has also been rescheduled to run June 5th through the 20th. (Guess we should call it our “late”
Spring Membership Show.) Hope you are all busy painting and getting ready to enter this show which will be judged and
prizes awarded.

A very special thanks
To Bill Foster, our February demonstrator, who donated his fee to our Center. This has paid for our much needed new
ceiling fans. We appreciate his generosity!!!

President’s Message
January has been an exciting month for the Camarillo Art Center. Our January art demonstration was advertised on the
City’s electronic billboard at Constitution Part – thanks to Joseph Benti!
We had fifteen new members join and over half of the regular members have already paid their dues for 2004.
Sharon Sharpe has cleaned all of the blue chairs, and they look great! Anita McDermott has been hard at work, as usual,
writing grant proposals.
Don’t miss out! Julio Rocha’s show will be up until February 15th. A new exhibit of digital artwork by Steve Parr will
begin on February 21st.
Jan Turner will be teaching watercolor classes starting February 10th. Our demonstrator for this month will be William
Foster who works in chalk pastels and is known for his Santa Barbara landscapes. Hope to see you there.

Rummage Sale in June!
It’s never too soon to think about our big fund-raiser of the year, our rummage sale, which will be held the first weekend
in June. Start cleaning out your garage, closets, etc., and plan to add all those no longer needed items to our sale.

Thank you, thank you, thank you
Thanks to all of you who contributed to giving me a Life Membership to our organization. What a wonderful gift! It was
given to me at the January demo and I am most grateful. It was very much MY pleasure to lead the art community of Camarillo
for the past two years. Thank you, good friends.

President’s Message
As your new president, I am already greatly impressed and gratified by the number of members who continually give their
time and efforts to our Camarillo Art Center. We are truly blessed. The support of all of you helps to diminish my anxiety
over assuming such an overwhelming position and attempting to follow such very successful past presidents as Anita
McDermott and John Colby.
My main goal as your president will be to bring more people (visitors and members) to the Art Center. We have so many
talented artists and much to offer our community. We now have created a committee to help accomplish this goal. Joseph
Benti and Patty Ecker are the Membership Drive Committee co-chairpersons. We need your input and assistance to accomplish
this goal.
This year is off to a flying start. We have already hung a wonderful new show, “Anything Goes,” which has 38 paintings.
This show will run through Sunday, January 25th. Be sure to drop in before it ends. Bring a friend with you! A new exhibit
featuring the work of one of our members, Julio Rocha, will begin on January 31st.

New Show Coming
One of our members, Julio Rocha, will host a show of his works from January 31st through February 15th.
Since his retirement, Julio has dedicated himself entirely to his hidden love – ART. His work began primarily with
creating replicas in miniature of different structures like doors, balconies, churches, etc., emphasizing the beauty and
simplicity of these structures that generally go unnoticed by man.
The fascination Julio feels towards color and perspective are reflected in his recent line of oil and acrylic paintings,
developing attractive relief paintings on canvas and other surfaces.
Julio was born in Chile. He and his wife, Maria Cristina Mujica, have three grown children who are all professionals.

January Demo Meeting
The Center will host an art demonstration on Wednesday, January 21st, at 7:30 p.m.
Annette Hammer, who works in both acrylic and oil, will demonstrate her landscape techniques.
Ms. Hammer has been painting for over 30 years. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from USC with a BFA in Fine Arts, and also
studied through Associates in Art and the California Art Institute. She has worked as a background artist, layout artist,
and storyboard cleanup artist at Nickelodeon Animation Studio on animated shows. She has also designed scenery backdrops
and murals for local theatrical productions.
Ms. Hammer has been participating in juried outdoor fine art shows for the past 2 ½ years. Her focus has been large
landscapes of California scenes.
