President’s Message

My past two years as president has flown by! Our goals for the Camarillo Art Center were met, thanks to the input, support, encouragement and hard work by the board members, committee chairpersons, and all of you.

We rewrote the by-laws, redid the membership brochure, purchased a hot water heater, purchased display units, bought and installed the new marquee sign, and managed to get the Garden Court designed and planted.

We learned much from the demonstrators who shared their talents with us. Jean Bricker taught art to the children. We were able to exhibit our artwork and proudly show it to friends, family, and interested viewers in the community. High school students and middle school students had their own shows and competitions. Individual artists were able to have their own exhibits.

We enjoyed the receptions with delicious snacks and drinks, both inside and out in the Garden Court. Gallery sitters who guarded our work and greeted visitors were and are much appreciated. We all did our bit in “fostering civic pride in the cultural development of Camarillo.” The City of Camarillo, Meadowlark Service League, and the Rotary Clubs gave us the financial help we needed to reach our goals. We thank them all!

Happy Holidays to all of you!

Anita McDermott

Winners’ Show

Our current art show is a display of all artworks that won awards during this year, either at our own shows or elsewhere, such as the Ventura County Fair. There are many beautiful paintings to view, so do stop by.

This show will run through the weekend of December 21st.

THE GALLERY WILL BE CLOSED THE WEEKEND FOLLOWING CHRISTMAS.

“Anything Goes”

This is our next show which starts on January 3rd and runs through January 25th.

The show is open to members only. It will not be judged and there are no entry fees. Just bring a few of your favorite works of art that we can all enjoy. Bring your work(s) on Saturday morning, January 3rd, between 9 and 11 a.m.

The next show

will be a private showing of the works of one of our members, Julio Rocha. It will run January 31st through February 15th. A more detailed biography of this talented man will be presented in the January newsletter.

President’s Message

Just a friendly reminder to all of you that the Camarillo Art Center is an organization of volunteers. We have been in existence for over 30 years and have NO paid staff. It runs smoothly and efficiently because many share the jobs and responsibilities. Our membership and fiscal year starts on January 1st, so we are trying to fill the committee chairmanships for 2004. None are very time-consuming or difficult. If anyone has a problem or a question, help is immediate from anyone on the executive board.

If you paid the fee for joining, it means that you will get to show your work, paint on Thursday mornings with us, attend all of the art demos gratis, but it also insinuates that you will help us keep the organization running in some small or large way. Gallery sitting once or twice a year is a very “small” thing to ask. Helping the telephone committee call a few times a year takes minimal effort. Bringing refreshments to a demo or reception is so simple. Even pulling weeds in the Garden Court or helping plant some new plants a few times a year is easy.

Please, please think of ways you can participate in some small way to ease the workload of the executive committee and other committees. Friendships blossom when you work together on a project. We really need your help. Please give it freely and cheerfully. I will now step down from the lectern.

If you have won any ribbons in the past year, either at an art competition or at the County Fair, you are invited to show your work in the “Winners – 2003” show which starts November 29th. Bring your artwork in that morning between 9 and 11 a.m. We’ll be closed the weekend between Christmas and New Year’s, so the “Winners” show will end on December 21st.

Have a HAPPY THANSGIVING with family and friends!

Anita McDermott

Our sympathy

is extended to Jan and John Colby on the recent pass away of her mother.

Our Fall Membership Show

is now in progress and will run until November 23rd. A reception is held on Sunday, November 16th, from 1 to 4 p.m., with awards being presented at 2 p.m.

Winners’ Show will follow the above-mentioned show, running from November 29th through December 21st. The winners of the Fall Membership Show PLUS all winners for the year – including outside shows you may have entered – will be presented i n this show. Please bring your winning art to the Center on the morning of November 29th, between 9 and 11 a.m.

The Art Center

will be closed on the weekend between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Welcome, new members

We are happy to welcome the following folks into our membership:

President’s Message

Congratulations to the executive directors who were elected for the 2004 term at the annual meeting. As “movers and shakers” of this volunteer organization, they deserve and need our support. When we join a group like ours, we buy into its mission statement, “striving to foster civic pride in the cultural development of Camarillo.” We commend their spirit in taking on their positions and we are grateful to them for saying “yes” when asked to share their talents.

Some of you will chose to continue acting as chairpersons for various committees, and some of you will be asked to take on new chairmanships. If any of you are interested in any particular committee, please let me know. The running of a total volunteer group is such a pleasure when many share the responsibilities.

Monthly art demonstrations given at the Art Center are one of the main services of our organization. Many members join because of the opportunity to learn from the demonstrators. The demos appeal to everyone’s interests, the practicing artists and those who support the art, thereby expanding their knowledge and enjoyment of art.

Pam Solakian has been arranging our demo schedule for many years and chooses topnotch artists to instruct us. We recently hosted a demo by Judy Klement which was entertaining, full of new insights and techniques to improve the skills of the pastelists. Our next demo will be by Don Fay who demonstrates his watercolor techniques, to be held October 15th at 7:30 p.m. He is one of our major artists in Camarillo. A raffle of the artist’s work helps fill the coffers of our Art Center. Please come and bring a friend.

Our current exhibit by the students of Jackie Cavish in the Ventura Adult Education class is one dear to my heart as I’ve been painting with this group for over ten years. It includes all levels and is held on Wednesday mornings and afternoons at two different locations in Ventura. Jackie is a talented supportive art instructor and gives assistance when needed in a kind, caring way. Come see the exhibit and join the class.

Another wonderful art teacher, Phyl Doyon, and her students, will have a show at the Center entitled “Energy,” for three weekends starting October 18th, Phyl’s shows are always professionally presented. Twenty five students will show their works. Their reception is on October 19th. You are all invited.

Start working on your entry for the Membership Judged Show coming up in November. BIG MONEY may be in your future, as fortune cookies predict.

A Sad Goodbye

to long-time members, Ardeth and Dick Jones. They are moving away to be closer to relatives. Ardeth is a very fine artist and has worked for many years in a number of capacities at the Center. We will certainly miss them both.

October Demo

On Wednesday evening, Oct 15th, at 7:30 p.m., Don Fay, well-known watercolorist, will give a demonstration on his techniques in this medium.

Don graduated with a Fine Arts Certificate from the California College of Arts and Crafts, completed graduate work at the Art Center College of Design, and had a 35-year career as an art and information director before concentrating on the fine art. He has won many awards and teaches and exhibits extensively.

Member's Art On Display

Elisabeth McGinn, one of our own members, is displaying some of her artwork at the Santa Paula Library and at the Borders Bookstore at the Esplanade in Oxnard. Be sure to check it out if you get a chance!

Welcome To New Members!

We’re happy to welcome new members Florence Gillman and Gwen Lyon and look forward to their active participation in the Center.

September, 2003

President’s Message

We have great news to report! The Nominating Committee has come up with a complete slate of executive committee officers for 2004. You’ll get to vote for them (or others, if nominated from the floor), at our Annual Meeting and Potluck Dinner on Sunday, September 14th, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Art Center. We’ll vote, eat at tables in the garden, share future plans, and discuss mat cutting, framing, and whatever else comes to mind.

Next in the Really Big News department is the development of a website by Andrew Luu for our organization. He’ll also manage it. As usual, if you sell artwork through our website, you are to send in a commission donation of 20% to the Art Center. The honor system applies here as always. We trust you!

We have colorful tee shirts for sale as a fundraiser for the Center from the Oxnard Strawberry Festival (on consignment). They were designed by one of our members, Diane Severtson. Plan to purchase some for yourselves or friends. We’ll have them available in all sizes at the Annual Meeting.

Starting on Thursday morning, the 11th of September, we’ll have open painting at the Center from 9 to noon. Word has it that the Oxnard Adult Education Department will no longer have classes at the airport on Thursday mornings, and this is meant to replace it. No teacher, though, so you’ll be on your own, with gentle critiques from the other art students. We have some easels, tables and chairs. If you need anything else, please bring it. You can paint outside in the garden or indoors. Please protect the carpet as you would in your home.

The Kids’ Summer Art Camp is currently showing their artwork in our gallery, until the 14th. Please stop in and see it. These are the Van Goghs of tomorrow.

Our gallery will host an exhibit by Jackie Cavish’s students from the Ventura Adult Education Department from September 27th to October 12th. Their reception is on October 5th. It will be our part in the Ventura County Arts Week 2003, presented by the Ventura County Arts Council. You are cordially invited to attend.

We’ll be having a super demo by Judy Klement on September 17th, at 7:30 p.m., on various washes that can be applied for pastel paintings. Come and learn some new techniques.

New Addition To Art Library

Shirley Sharpe has donated a beautiful book to our art library. It is called, “The Great Book Of French Impressionism,” by Horst Keller.

You can check out these books any time the Art Center is open. We have a great collection of books, both instructional and collections of famous art.

Thanks so much, Shirley!

And The Winners Are…

Some of our members entered artwork at the Ventura County Fair this summer.

Congratulations to Sandy Paden for winning a first-place ribbon, and to Mike Mancusi for winning both a first-place and second-place ribbons.

Among our members, the following had artwork selected for showing at the Maritime Museum’s juried annual art exhibit: Shirley Sharpe, Susan Stoutz, Elizabeth McGinn, and Lee Truman.

Judy Klement, who will be our demonstrator this month, won a second-place ribbon in this show. Congratulations to all!!!

Welcome To New Members!

We are happy to welcome three new members: Christine Leung , Perry Castellano and Florence Gillman. Christine is a well-known Chinese brush painter (particularly renowned for her work in Hong Kong) and has expressed an interest in holding classes at the center. Perry is a sculptor . Besides painting, Florence also does pottery. We look forward to seeing works from all three.

President’s Message

If you missed seeing the July Art Show honoring our demonstrators, you missed a real gem. It was one of the best local shows I’ve ever attended. At the reception, 80 or more guests sipped cool drinks, noshed delectable tidbits, and chummed with the artists under the shade of the tall leafy trees in the Garden Court. It was a perfect afternoon in a very picturesque locale.

Our next extravaganza (including a potluck dinner) will be held on Sunday, September 14th, at 5 p.m., when we will have an annual meeting hopefully attended by all our members. Besides dinner and the election of officers, we’d like to have discussions and demos on “How To Cut Your Own Mats,” “How To Choose A Frame To Compliment Your Artwork,” “How To Photograph Your Work,” and “How To Have Slides Made (economically) For Competitions.” We need input from you on the long range planning of our organization. Are we heading in the right direction? Only you can tell us your secret “art” desires…

Congratulations to Diane Severtson, one of our new members, for designing the winning poster for the Oxnard Strawberry Festival. She also designed an original themed poster for the recent Camarillo Fiesta. We’re fortunate to be able to rub shoulders with her! She’s an excellent pastel artist and we hope her talent is contagious.

Dr. Martin Ettinger will have a sculpture exhibit starting on August 16th. He has offered to give the Art Center 50% of the price of any commissioned work. His show will be followed by a two-weekend show of the children’s art produced in art camp this summer at the Art Center.

In Memoriam

We were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Marie Young, a member and very talented artist.

Marie was an active member, serving as gallery chairperson and Board secretary. She was also past Chapter President of the American Artists of Chinese Brush Painting, and a member of the Oriental Brushwork Society of America, the National Sumi-e Society of America, and other art-related organizations.

Marie shared her unique talents by teaching at our own gallery and at other clubs, schools, etc. She will be missed.

Portraits In Clay

There will be an exhibition of sculptures by Dr. Martin Ettinger at the Art Center for three weekends starting August 16th.

Dr. Ettinger learned about carving from a book he borrowed from the Camarillo Library entitled “Carving Twigs And Branches.” He then took a course in carving and later progressed into working in clay. He now takes commissions.

He has exhibited in Leisure Village, the Carnegie Art Museum, Thousand Oaks Art Gallery and the Thousand Oaks Art Walk.

During the exhibition here he will have an album of photos of his work and a selection of clay figures.

Dr. Ettinger is a retired dentist who, with his wife, Mitzi, moved to Camarillo 19 years ago.
